Many factors are there which decides the health of our glands i.e. your diet, your daily activities, your mental pressure and many more but Yoga is the best way which helps your glands to function perfectly. There are many postures which help to cure the Thyroid Gland but here I will discuss the easier and classical postures to stimulate the Thyroid & Parathyroid gland thus maximum people can take the benefits with minimum efforts.

My purpose is always to introduce the simple but the best yoga techniques from the classical scripture of Yoga which is still alive by the master disciple’s system from thousands of year. In past thyroid problems were maximum in females but now it’s very common in males as well. This blog of mine will definitely help you to cure your thyroid without medicines but only if you practice the same.

I always advise my readers not just to store the information of Yoga in your brain but apply the same to avail the benefits. A great saint from India Swami Sivananda said: “An ounce of practice is better than tons of theories”. So let’s understand how your thyroid gland function and what is the suggested Yoga which helps it to work properly.

What is Thyroid Gland?

The thyroid gland is situated in your neck which is the part of the endocrine gland. The main purpose of this gland is to produce two hormones which secreted with the blood(Thyroxine T4 & Triiodothyronine T3). To work normally all the cells in your body compulsory needs both the hormones.

These days disorders of thyroid can be seen very common in women, men, youth, babies, children or we can say, anybody. Survey says that about 1 in 12 people has at least some kind disorder of thyroid, that could be permanent or temporary.

This glad is situated in the front part of your neck in a position just under your Adam’s apple. It is made up of two lobes-  one is right lobe and other is left lobe, the size of each lobe is about half part of a plum. Thyroid tissue known as Isthmus joins both lobes by a small bridge. Both lobes lie on either side of your windpipe.

Suggested Yoga Asanas For Thyroid Gland

1. Sarvang Asana(Shoulder Stand)

Sarvang Asana(Shoulder Stand) is known as the mother of all yoga asanas. This is the best-inverted posture which brings the blood from the legs towards the head. As there is no organ in the legs but because of the gravity blood flow is always more towards the legs. Our head needs more blood it does not get the required blood because of the same gravity. When we practice the Sarvang Asana by locking the chin with chest we can hold the blood at the neck reason which helps to stimulate the thyroid and parathyroid glands. If you have the cervical problem or neck injury don’t practice it or consult with your yoga trainer.

Process To Do The Sarvang Asana

After doing 3 to 4 sets of Surya Namaskar Sets(As per Video Footer) lie down on your yoga mat. Bring your feet together. Place your arms around the body palms facing down. Take two or three deep breaths. Now, as you inhale lift your both legs up, hips up, buttocks up, trunk up and hold with palms on the upper back(which is downside now). Before doing any adjustment take two or three deep breath thus your body and mind understand that you are into invert position. Now if you want to adjust the posture than bend your knees towards the forehead. Now shift your elbows near to each other or parallel to shoulders. Once you feel comfortable again lift your legs up. Lock your chin with the chest. Hold this posture as per your body allow. Don’t force your body to do the same in the beginning. Later you may increase the timing from 3 to 5 minutes. When you want to release the posture bend your knees towards the forehead. Place your palms one by one on the ground. Now place your spine vertebrae by
vertebrae. Slowly place your back, trunk and legs on the ground without lifting your head. This is the best yoga posture for the thyroid but it must be followed by the counter posture Matsya Asana(Fish Pose).

2.Matsya Asana(Fish Pose)

Matsya Asana(Fish Pose) is not only the counter posture of Sarvang Asana but this asana also helps to stimulate the thyroid and parathyroid glands. Make sure when you practice this asana your focus must be on the neck reason. It is advised to practice this asana just after the sarvang asana. You should spend half of the time of sarvang asana in this posture as if you practised the sarvang asana for 2 minutes you should practice this asana for 1 minute.

Process to do Matsya Asana(Fish Pose)

Once you finish with the Sargang Asana relax for few breaths on the mat before we start the counterpoise. Now place your hands under your body. Hide your elbows completely under your body. Palms under your buttocks. Now push your elbows down and lift your head and chest up. Now try to bring your elbows nearer to each other. Shift your body weight on your elbows and keep lifting your chest up. Now hand your head let the crown of the head go down. Keep breathing and let the head relax on the floor. Make sure body weight if completely on the elbows, not on the head. Inhale and expand your diaphragm, Exhale contract your abdomen. To release, the posture lift your head up. Slowly release the hands and put your back down on the mat. Relax your thyroid gland but focusing on the neck reason.

3. Setu Bandh Asana(Bridge Pose)

Setu Bandh Asana is also very good asana for the thyroid and parathyroid glands. If you have Sevier back pain then avoid doing this asana. This asana is also very good for the back.

How to do Setu Band Asana(Bridge Pose)

Lie down on your back take two, three deep breath. Place your palms beside your body. Open your legs shoulders bit part bend your knees. Bring your heels near to your buttocks. Lift your hips, Buttocks up. Support on the back, this time fingers towards the back and thumbs towards the chest. Lock your chin with the chest nicely. Hold the posture as per your body allow. Then release the posture and relax on the mat.

4. Pawanmukt Asana

Pawanmukt asana is the counter pose for the Ardh Chakra Asana & Chakra Asana. This not only helps the spine to relax but also help to stimulate the thyroid and parathyroid glands.

Process to the Pawanmukt Asana

Roll back on the mat take two or three deep breaths. Now bend your knees towards the chest. Hug your shin bones and press your spine down. Now lift your head up and try to bring the knows or chin or forehead between the knees. Hold the posture for a few breaths. Make sure you breathe while you hold any of the above postures. When you want to release the posture you can put your head back release the shin bones. Inhale lift your legs up. Exhale legs down. Now give a complete relaxation to your thyroid and parathyroid glands.

Who is A Yoga Teacher in this era?

Yoga has become the most import way to be fit and peaceful in this age of the fast-moving world. Unemployment is increasing because the population is growing very fast. People are very busy in their professional life so they are not able to focus much on their health. So most of them are looking for A Yoga Teacher to do Yoga. Nowadays becoming A Yoga Teacher is very easy. There are thousands of schools around the globe who are providing the one-month yoga teacher training program and giving the certified yoga teacher training certificate of 200 hours or 300 hours. A large number of teachers belong to these schools only. We can say that becoming A Yoga Teacher is the easiest way in current time. Do you think that one can become a teacher of Yoga in 200 or 300 hours?

Who Certify These Yoga Teachers?

There are few yoga alliances and many boards who claim that we are the best alliances to judge a school or a teacher. These alliances certify the schools by sitting in other countries by charging some amount per year to continue the membership of the school thus these schools can produce yoga teachers with one month course. Moreover, the teachers who are teaching these students during this one month most of them also have done a similar yoga course either from the same school or from the other. After doing this one month course a yoga teacher is ready to give the knowledge of yoga anywhere in the world because now he is an authorised yoga teacher from one of the certified yoga school which school is authorised by some alliance or board.

Are these Yoga Teachers reliable to learn yoga?

Although I am no-one to answer this question whether these are reliable teachers or not. Moreover, I have no right to put my finger on the credibility of the yoga schools for issuing the certificates of Yoga teacher but as per my experience of my Yoga life since 1998 I just understood that no-one can become a teacher of Yoga in his/her life. One can only remain a student of yoga till the death. Yoga is a very vast subject and even one life is not enough to become a yoga teacher. I personally believe that if you have the good Karmas from your past life then only you can associate with Yoga in your current life. Even to become a doctor it takes more than five years to get a degree and he or she has to pass the several exams to get the degree. But these schools give the certificate of a yoga teacher to everyone who enrols in the exams. Many of the people who attend these programs are failures from the other fields or join these courses to get rid of the bad habits like smoking or alcohol addiction. After spending one month living in such schools these teachers are ready to teach yoga and change the lives of others. Trust me most of the teachers around the globe are just from this category. They could be good in showing the Asanas but Asanas are just one small part of Yoga. In other words, we can say that Asanas are not yoga. These teachers are just forcing their students to do more and more asanas without understanding the condition of the body type. Many yoga teachers even don’t know the sequence of yoga poses and counterposes and because of that their students face the problems and start to hate Yoga for the rest of their life. Many people complained to me about these kinds of problems when they attend my workshops or classes.

What to do before hiring A Yoga Teacher?

You don’t need to do anything special before hiring a Yoga Teacher for you. Certificates authorized by any alliance or board is just a piece of paper if he/ she does not has the practical knowledge of proper yogic teaching. Before starting your classes with any teacher you must take the feedback from his/her previous students or teaching places. He/She must be properly certified from some good trusted Yoga School. He/She must be fit enough. His/Her knowledge on the Sanskrit mantras or prayers is also important because these are more important than just doing asanas.

Although word Yoga is one of the oldest words which is derived from the Sanskrit root yuj,” (pronoun “yug”) meaning “to join” or “to unite”. Our books are the biggest example that Yoga exists for thousands of years. Modern generation adopted just the most visible part of Yoga that is the Asanas for their physical fitness and Mental balance. I am never in favour to change the classical way of teaching yoga to the modern generation just for the self-benefit like other modern yogis but I advice the modern generation to adopt the classical way of learning Yoga not only for their physical, mental, spiritual or social benefits but also to save the heritage intellectual property of our powerful and self-realized sages.

As you know that I have several students of Yoga not only from Eastern countries but also from the western countries as well. Because of the cultural and geographical differences, the living style and thinking process of the modern generation is totally different among all countries. Western generation is more focused towards the material things and Indian continent’s modern generation is also very much attracted towards the western culture. But when the western people fail to meet the highest aim (happiness & peace) of a person with the latest material things in a lavish lifestyle they take a U-turn towards Yoga. By just performing some yoga Asanas(postures) and Pranayama(Breathing Exercise) they feel more relaxed. So we can say that the current generation is the most facilitated generation we ever had but we can’t say that the current generation is the happiest generation. Many youths from the west and India say that Yoga is the way to renounce the worldly & sensual pleasure but I always ask them that in this fast and stressful world are really enjoying the worldly and sensual objects? And the answer is always no. This is the situation of every one of us but we are not ready to accept it. I tell them that if you really want to enjoy the pleasure of the world than also you need a pure mind and a healthy body. Yes, the highest aim of Yoga is the self-realization but the good side effects of yoga are also a healthy body, balanced mind and good character. So I never want to modify the Yoga for the modern generation but I would like to advise them to adopt the classical form of Yoga to live a happy and peaceful life.

The challenge to deal with the mind is not only the problem of the modern generation but this is the challenge even before the beginning of civilization. This is the reason that very old holy book Gita is still known as the best book to deal with the challenges set by the rascal mind even this book is more than 5000 years old. Now the question arises in front of us that how it can be possible to solve the queries of the mind with the help of thousands of years old books like Gita or Bible etc. even in those days we were not developed like now and we had different challenges in front of us. I agree that we are the most developed civilised generation now but even after all these facilities our mind is not satisfied and always wondering restless to have more. Our scripture says that anger and greed are the most common ingredients to make our mind stressful. The mother of anger and greed is Desire. If the desire is fulfilled it comes with more greed and wants even more and if it not fulfilled it comes as anger. So these books and Yoga helps to convert the desires into needs. God has already given us whatever we need as per our Karmas and individual capacities but because of the unwanted desires and dealing with unwanted thoughts we are always unable to deal with the mind. Modern generation and old generation facing the same problems from centuries and centuries. Yoga is the only solution to solve the problems.

Yoga for modern generation is just doing the physical activities but in reality Yoga is far beyond it and Aasnas is just a small part of Yoga. Guru’s Grace

What is guru kripa (Guru Grace)? What are the prerequisites to obtain it? What changes happen then and why doesn’t the grace of guru last longer?

The grace of guru will only last for the time you open yourself to receive the grace. The moment you close yourself, it stops. You can fill a bottle with urine, cork it and place it in the middle of the Ganges river for a thousand years, in the belief that the Ganges will purify the urine in the bottle, but when you remove the bottle and uncork it, the water inside will still taste like one thousand year old amaroli. However, if you fill a bottle with urine, leave it uncorked and put it in the river, in one day it will be washed clean and there won’t be any trace of amaroli.

Which category of bottle person are you? Closed or open? This is not a joke. Despite our mutterings and musings, we all bottle ourselves up and we don’t have the ability to uncork ourselves. It is a fact that you wish to see the guru according to your expectations, aspirations and impressions and do not accept the guru as the guru is. If this is the mentality, then how can we open ourselves to accept, to receive the grace?

The relationship with God is similar. We say to God, “You are the master but become my servant and do my bidding.” We order God around by praying to Him to help us with this problem, to help that person with that problem, to help with a disease or a nervous breakdown or by providing someone with a child. That is how we relate with God. “Oh, God you are the master but please do my bidding and help A, B, C, D, my uncle, my niece, my nephew, my wife, my child, my friend, my this, my that.”

By praying like this we hope for the grace to descend. Guru’s grace or God’s grace does not descend until there is absolute selfless projection of one’s ego, ahamkara. For the selfless projection of the ego to take place, all the dross of the human nature and personality has to be removed first. It is not an easy process. People say, “Surrender”. Surrendering is not easy. People say, “Love.” Loving is not easy. People say, “Obey.” Obeying is not easy. People say, “Have pure intentions.” Even that is not easy.

Nothing is easy in life. One has to work to make things happen. One has to work to purify oneself and to open the channel by which the grace can come. The channel which opens is the channel of sincerity. The channel which opens the flow of grace is the channel of innocence. Learning to be innocent, humble, simple, uninhibited and free from the effects of ego is the sadhana, the training given to be able to receive the grace of God or the grace of guru. It is much more complex and difficult than any yoga practice which one may perfect. We take great pride in having performed the headstand or the wheel pose or the peacock pose. Why can’t we take equal pride when we are able to perform some good work with ourselves, with our mind, with our ego? Therefore, although we talk about guru’s grace or God’s grace, it is a very distant reality in our lives. One has to strive to purify the mind of raga and dwesha, of the experiences which give pleasure, satisfaction and contentment, and of the experiences which give displeasure, dissatisfaction and discontent. This is the first level of purity that is demanded – not recommended but demanded.

The second level of purity is being innocent. When you are innocent you don’t apply your intellectual mind to decide things according to your choices and wishes. Rather you become like an empty flute through which new melodies can come when played by an expert player.

So guru’s grace will only last for the time that you have uncorked yourself. Sometimes we even fear removing the cork – “I will lose myself, I will lose my identity. What will happen to me?” The insecurities come forward and they bind us to this plane. If these things did not exist, then we would not exist, we would all be enlightened. So it is important that they have a say in our life, but only a say. They should not control our life; we should be able to control our life. Do that and you will see the sky burst and a ray of light fall on your head.
